The Guide to Successful Instagram Flat-lays

Updated: Mar 29, 2020

It's a New Year and a new guide to Instagram! Flatlays are all over Instagram and for some, they are one of the hardest things to master. However, no need to worry because this girl has experience and I'm here to share my tips & tricks to mastering the Instagram flatlay.

Tip #1: Choose a Focal Point

Choosing a focal point is one of the most important steps to getting the perfect flatlay. This focal point can be a skincare/beauty product, a book, plant, earrings, or even yourself! Once you have a focal point, you'll be able to start grabbing for other props and things that will help bring the image together.

Tip #2: Choose a Color Palette

Choosing a color palette will not only create a sense of emotion, but as well bring everything together. For instance, if you choose to work with lighter, brighter colors, the image is going to create an uplifting, happy feeling when seen and vise versa if you choose to use darker blues and blacks.

Tip #3: Use Geometric Shapes

Use a variety of geometric shapes to create a sense of flow. I like to use all different shapes and sizes like shown below at All Hands Workshops.

Tip #4: Shoot in Natural Light

Personally, I am a natural light photographer so it only seems right to shoot in natural light. However, if I wasn't a natural photographer, I think I would choose natural light anyways because it just seems more real and creates a sense of life rather than artificial lighting.

Tip #5: Shoot Bird Eye View

Always shoot down when shooting a flat lay. You will be able to see the full image and all the details perfectly in birds eye view!

Tip #6: Use a Square Template

I recommend shooting in a square template because it makes capturing the focal point and important details a lot easier. Additionally, if you are to post on Instagram, you will be able to see the full image on your feed.

Tip #7: Experiment With Different Layouts

Some of my best flatlays are from putting one together and slowly taking it apart or moving things around. Sometimes we overthink things and moving the objects around could completely change the mood/vibe of the image.

Tip #8: Experiment With Different Angles

This happens to be my last tip for the day, but it is one of the most important. Don't be afraid to walk around and try new angles. Get creative, test the lighting from each side and I promise you won't regret it.

These were just a few tips to perfecting Instagram Flatlays, but they are what I use and would recommend to everyone. Hope you're enjoying the new year and fresh start!

Xoxo,

Linds
